Meals are delivered
between 11:00 am and 1:00pm. A meal unit consists of two meals
– a hot meal consisting of meat, poultry or fish, a starch and
vegetable with dessert and a cold meal consisting of a sandwich,
soup, fruit, cookie and a snack.
Many clients require daily
service, others require only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Frozen meals are delivered to cover the weekends. Special
diets are available, as well as services of a Registered Dietitian.
Please call with any additional questions to 403-243-2834.
We cater to health or
cultural needs, not individual tastes. Clients pay according
to their ability, with service available without discrimination
across all communities.
In 2005, 1856 clients
received meals from Calgary Meals on Wheels direct home delivery
program, in addition to the 216 bag lunches per day for the working
homeless, service to some 600 elementary school children, and those
served through our community support programs - totaling some
410,000 meals prepared, portioned, packaged, and delivered from our
central location.
Calgary Meals on Wheels is proud to say that in our 41 years
history, we have never failed to deliver the scheduled meals.
This reflects the commitment and support of some 747 dedicated
volunteers, our staff and Board, and the assistance of good
neighbours during severe winter weather.
Our standard and
hallmark meal service is based on some 75 - 80 volunteers a
day (Monday – Friday), delivering an average of 1400 meals (or 700
meal units) to seniors (60 plus), convalescents and people with
disabilities, living within Calgary city limits. These meals,
which include special diets and provide 85% of the nutritional needs
for the majority of the clients served, consist of 2 meals (a hot
lunch and cold supper plus a snack), and are delivered Monday to
Friday between 11:30am and 1:00pm. Extra meals can be
ordered for the weekend to accompany the Friday delivery. 52 %
(fifty two) of these meals are special diets, ordered for health
care reasons. The price for this service is on a sliding scale,
with services available without discrimination across all
communities.
Besides the provision of good meals, a core value of this and our
other services, is the social contact with each client, ensuring
their safety, enjoying a short visit, and engaging each one in
conversation as an effort to reduce isolation and add “care and
comfort” by friendly and committed volunteers coming to their place
of residence.
In addition to
our standard meal service, our Production Centre Team also prepares
and manages distribution of the following:

Calgary Meals on Wheels is proud to serve the citizens of Calgary
through initiatives and partnerships which are planned to be
supportive and responsive to need. The services are
non-discriminatory, providing meals and informal security checks to
all who are in need of this assistance. For those whose
financial status is stretched due to health or personal
circumstances, the organization offers not only a sliding scale for
payment, but also a client meal subsidy program made possible
through donations.
