Our greatest strength and heart of Calgary Meals on Wheels is seen amongst our dedicated volunteers who give of their time year round to help provide nutritious balanced meals to those in need.  It makes you realize the spirit of volunteerism in our city and how the small act of delivering a meal impacts others lives.  We certainly could not provide this service without the acts of kindness and generosity of all of our wonderful volunteers.  Here is what a couple of clients had to say…

With a corps of 747 volunteers and 75,140 hours donated last year we were successful in delivering 366,000 meals to 1856 clients at their place of residence.  Each week day, we need around 70 to 75 volunteers to help deliver meals to some 700 homes on 60 routes citywide.  This is quite a feat each day and regardless of the weather, meals must be delivered and we have not missed a delivery after 41 years of service.  The challenge for the future will be to attract enough volunteers to match the growth of our city.

After 41 years of service to Calgary Meals on Wheels she insists on delivering meals.  We are so proud to have Hattie as part of our team.  On Wednesday she gives of her time in delivering meals and her generosity has helped many clients in our communities throughout the years and it shows.  In April 2006, at the Volunteer Calgary 10^th Annual Leadership Awards, Mrs. Boothman received the 2005 VIP Award presented by CTV Television, to honor and salute the difference Hattie has made in the lives of others.

The late Patricia Bourne was President of Calgary Meals on Wheels from 1978 to 1981.  In recognition of her volunteer commitment to the organization, and in her memory, the family established a fund to enable Calgary Meals on Wheels to hold a spring luncheon to honor volunteers and present an award in her name.  The Patricia Bourne Award is given to an individual who is nominated by fellow volunteers for exemplary contribution to Calgary Meals on Wheels. 

Our 2005 recipient of the Patricia Bourne Award presented at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in April 2006 was Eileen Butler who has given over 5100 hours of volunteer service in the past 10 years.  Her many talents has contributed to numerous Board Committees including Human Resources, Fund Development, Governance and Marketing and Communications, as well as being Secretary, Vice-President, President (2001-2002) and Past President of the Board.  Not only has she continued to deliver meals, she also led and organized our first Gala and continued to lead through three consecutive and very successful “Feast for Your Ears’ Galas.  We are proud to recognize and congratulate Eileen Butler for this award.
