Supporting Men’s Mental Health Through Food and Connection
June marks Men’s Health Month with Men’s Health Week running from June 9 to June 15 this year. Men’s Health Month is a time to spotlight the unique health challenges men face and to promote holistic well-being. This year, the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation is focusing on mental health and reminding men that they are #NeverAlone as alarming new statistics come out: 64% of men report moderate-to-high stress and 1 out of 4 men are at risk for moderate-to-severe depression, yet over two-thirds of men have never sought professional mental health support services.
More Than A Meal
Nutrition can play a pivotal role in mental well-being. Diets rich in lean protein, fruits, and vegetables have been associated with enhanced mood and reduced symptoms of depression while highly processed foods may exacerbate feelings of anxiety. At Calgary Meals on Wheels, our balanced meals can support both physical and mental resilience. Did you know the average person makes 200 food-related decisions every day? By ensuring access to wholesome meals, we can help mitigate one of the stressors contributing to mental health challenges.
1 in 2 men are at risk for social isolation, particularly men living alone, younger men aged 19-29, and racialized men. Our daily meal deliveries are opportunities for meaningful interaction. Our volunteers engage with clients, offering a sense of connection. These daily check-ins can be instrumental in identifying individuals who may need additional supports.
