Kidney Health Month

March is Kidney Health Month and today, March 12, is World Kidney Day! Did you know almost two million Canadians have chronic kidney disease or are at risk, and most are unaware of it?

Our kidneys are amazing organs. They filter your blood 20-25 times a day, removing waste, helping produce red blood cells, and regulating blood pressure. Every minute, your kidneys filter about half a cup of blood, separating the waste and concentrating it to form urine.

Am I At Risk?

There are many risks for kidney disease, some that you can control and others that you cannot. Smoking, misuse of certain medication, and drug or alcohol abuse can damage the kidneys. Risk is also higher for people of Aboriginal, South Asian, Pacific Island, African, Caribbean, and Hispanic descent. Other risk factors include obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, or if you have a family history of kidney disease.
